Children's Ministry

Being part of children's ministry at a local church with the MK2MK team encouraged me...not to be afraid of kids.

Gogo Penny - Epitomy of the 'Fruit of the Spirit'

Camp day, I looked at all the 151 kids about to pack em into the 3 luxury coaches, ecstatic as a child receiving a priceless gifts. for me it was more like, this is once again going to be the most amazing, well spent days of my life because I knew there would be a purpose for my going there. Little did I know, that my heart would be ripped out right of me, my spirit and heart would be tied to the kids that I am to lead for the next 4 nights. 7 am, devotion, 8 am breakfast, then let the excitement begin. for the first few days, its safe to say complete chaos ruled the camp site but a supernatural power, spirit by the 2nd night, flooded each dorm, bungalow, rondeval and more especially, each spirit. I am flabbergasted at what The Holy Spirit seeded at this camp, for others it was harvest time but I most importantly believe there has been an unobtainable, incomprehendable seed, coated with the grace of God that has been rooted deep in those kids from Ntuzuma. I shiver in forseeing the results of it all.

I tell you this, we had to re-shooto this over 5 times, mind you, on 'continuous shot' mode - but they did it.

Best football team that had ever rocked this camp - look closely, what you looking at is 4 dramatic soccer stars! (and their trainer Mr Missionary/Sport Scientist Anele

Art time was always exciting - clearly he can vouch for that
It being a coincident that I councilled 8 boys ranging from 10 – 12, unlikely. It was pre-planned by God. When I had been teaching the kids on the Fruits of the Spirit, those devotions in the mornings weren’t just for them. Coming out of that camp, has left me so peaceful and humbled by the hand of God in these kids lives. All those kids at camp have received a great Spirit of truth and revelation. Some of them orphans by definition to HIV/AIDS, others HIV positive, I weep not of their loss but at the compassion they are to encounter from the Lord. The most vivid memories of this camp was the time I spent with 8 of my boys, 5 of which are in this shot below. Every night we would gather up in our humbly dirty room and discuss what they did, what they spoke about at life skills, what they learnt, what they found interesting. We would gather up and just make fun of the day. My time with these kids, looking back at it now, was the most well spent time of my life. The opportunity granted to minister in their lives and value them made me realize how waiting to be filled they are. I soon picked up a name for myself, make that names - they soon began to stick and they really sticked hard. Walking around with a belt does have its results apart from discipline.

Highlight of camp - Mens-time with some of the boys2men of camp
The first night for me leaving camp was tearingly horrible. I miss my boys so much. As much as I was responsible for councilling them, ministering, and discipling them, by belt and bible, I know they have taught me great things that I would have missed if I had not come to camp and I praise the Lord for that. The Lord has used them to show me what His Church should look. I am in awe at this revelation. I can remember looking over the Prayer Hall with all the kids and I was like: ‘Yes Lord, here they are, take over!’.

The only regrets I have about that camp is that I didn’t tell my boys as much as I was given the opportunity what they mean to me, their parents, siblings and guardians. A part of me believes if I had, it would of been difficult for me and them to part ways after camp but I’m sure they know it in their hearts that I am always there for them whenever they need me. Lord help me as I recover from this. I do not know why I feeling so heavy laden. Whatever it is, my kids are the reason I am so.

PS – Sboniso, Sbongiseni, Mhlengi, Vusi, Buhle, Thabani, Sipho, Luyanda – “Make me proud and remember the Fruits of the Spirits are – love, joys, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such, there is no law! Will never forget you boys. Remember to talk to God”

Its been a while since I last blogged and in my heart it has really been stirred up to share what has been lined up in my calender for the coming few weeks. Apart from the stressing exams which have befallen me currently, a place my chin high up as I await for the OVC camp. The OVC camp is he Orphaned and Vulnerable Childrens' Camp which is going to be running from the 3rd to the 7th of July 2011. Stretching in from the one we had last year there is great anticipation for the success of this camp. I know for such that all the leaders from all campuses of UKZN are looking forward to just spending their time with the kids from Ukukhanya Life Care Centre and Ntuzuma mostly.

Where this all comes from is that a special lady by the name of Gogo Penny has been running a ministry under the New Jerusalem Missions. She is all the way from the States and just from the onset, she has been a blessing to a great deal of orphans or kids from vulnerable homes and backgrounds. She has been amazing with her staff in ensuring that victims who have been infected and mostly affected by HIV/AIDS mostly the kids are looked after and taken care of. The centre is situated in Ntuzuma, a township South of Durban with a just about half of the population being HIV infected patients and almost everyone is affected by the pandemic one way or the other.

This year, as the past two years, she is raising funds to send 100 kids from this community (as well as 40 councillors) to a 5 day camp. The intention of this camp is to raise awareness about the stigma's surrounding HIV/AIDS, give the kids the love, compassion, and honor that they do not receive at home. Its a way of showing them that there are people out there who deeply cherish and  care for them. These kids are the future of world and they need to be shown humility and love as they without a shadow of a doubt are in need of this. I mean, ask testimonies of the councillors and leaders who had attended the camp last year and they will tell you of the breakthroughs that these kids had experienced.

There is great planning amidst the camp with a total of R143 500 (100 kids, 40 staff and councillors) still need to be raised so we deep in prayer with that. This amount covers cost for transportation, accomodation, food, supplies for games and crafts, blankets, extra clothing materials etc. The centre would greatly appreciate any sponsorship either through financial support or some of the items which would be required for each camper.
