Be still and know that I am God. A hymn we sang monotonously at my primary school. Rethinking it, just refreshes the humble and honest memories of being a young lad, who was at that time more worried that he hasn't done his homework rather than wrestling with God. The Lord just laid this Psalm in my heart this morning and the entire day as I had woken up to the tragic news of a young friend of mine who lost his battle to AIDS. Filled with so many questions at first, all unanswered with only one answer that for me, sealed our debacle - Be still and know that I am God. 'Don't question my ruling, my decision. As I have given life which brings glorious joys and praise to my name, surely I don't deserve judgement and curses when I take my creation to a place I have consecrated as Holy. Do you not trust me with him. I have taken him from a world of mayhem, evil, sin, destruction, imperfection, impurity and all that is detestable to me. Do you not think for a second he would want to be with me, away from a dependence of a cocktail of drugs, away from a society that has rejected him due to his parents sins, away from his fickle body that lacks nourishment! Be still my son and know that I am God. His surely peaceful where he is, so have peace where you are my son'

The first weekend of May we had a complex outreach, inviting the some of the ladies whom live in our complex. Me and Anele served them, Anele was on the baking side of things, preparing charred muffins with food preparation (the charred part was the stove’s fault) and I was involved in the logistics and communication, helping our team mates in what they planned to do, giving them idea’s in that. We praise the Lord as it went extremely well as 21 young female Edgewood 1st and 2nd year students acknowledge the invite. They had a splendid afternoon getting to know each other. The Lord’s leading created an environment of love and warmth as they explain it. There was a great volume of participation and some of the ladies sharing their personal stories, relating to each other affectionately. Initiating our year as a team, we constantly admonish each other in being ‘My Sisters/Brothers keeper’ and such an environment become more prominent that afternoon than anything else. Anele describes it as being the light and salt

This is how he puts it in his monthly newsletter: ‘We’ve been praying asking God how can we be the light and salt to our neighbours especially since Holzner Gardens (Where we stay) has 62 apartments and most of them houses female students from Edgewood Campus. So, we invited the students for a time of fellowship, fun, snacks and games. 21 ladies pitched and they watched videos which led to spiritual discussions and one girl prayed to receive Christ.’

Dr. Mike Anderson's visit to Durban

In my third year of study, what our ministry leader Alyssa Monda would often share with us is, in order of importance: Love ­­¹God, ²your studies, ³your responsibilities in ministry.

Dr. Mike Anderson who has taught philosophy of science at WITS and co-ordinated a graduate course in religion and science at the University of Cape Town and is in full time ministry as a writer, speaker and educational software developer focusing especially on Jesus and evolution, visited our campuses for 3 days. We had the opportunity to have him speaking at Westville, Edgewood and Howard campus on ‘Exam Strategy and Life’. This seminar was more on how to get students prepared for examinations as they are around the corner. He spoke on the importance of developing exam strategies for before, during and after exams with prominence on after. Students found his talk quite helpful in such regards and was a great blessing to them. His initial trip to Durban, was an effort to discuss with him some of the ways he could be of assistant to student leaders in their ministry. Example of this would be Science faculty outreach with him speaking on “Evolution and creation – their compatibility with the Gospel or lack-off”. Please be praying for the Lord to put in our hearts how we could use Dr. Anderson to reach our campuses for the next semester.

Discerning your calling

I remember reading this article by Tim Keller on "Discerning your calling" and I do suggest that you take the time to read it. The way he puts is the way we see 'God's Work' has been quite an obscure look into ministry and points out thats not the case. In fact we are all called into ministry and service to the Lord. He speaks with much clarity on that matter.
