Children's Ministry

Being part of children's ministry at a local church with the MK2MK team encouraged me...not to be afraid of kids.

This Friday was the long awaited and eagerly anticipated...wait for it...LEADERSHIP MEETING! Held every year, this meeting is more of a re-union occasion where the students lose track of time as they catch up with what their fellow leaders have been up to these holidays, how they missed eachother, when their next tea party is gonna be, who did their hair....and the list goes on. Sure by now you have catched on that these are mostly the ladies comment but on the contrary the guys rave about the latest guitar chords...hmmm - all of a sudden I forgot what the guys where speaking about. Ridiculous lol - don't judge me!!! Anyway the meeting was a great success as we were able to reconnect all the student leaders to the mission of campus ministry, relaying the foundation not too think though of what CRU@UKZN is all about. Time was taken and we spoke about numerous branches of the ministry such as discipleship on the campus, community projects and core groups, importantly the campus outreaches that are to take place at the different campuses (while we off to ministry training in Pretoria).

Guess who decided to drop in...Alyssa Monda. We manage to hook her up on skype and our students really had a great time speaking to her as she spurred us on! Though she is still in the States, she is still so much passionate about what the Lord has done and still is to do with campus ministry through the leadership, and agreeably enough, I side with her. What was more remarkable is when she prayed for the students, their campuses, and the ministry. I miss her, we all miss her.

Before Erica left, an intern who served on CRU for a year at UKZN, one thing she told me never to forget in any and everything I do, whether relating to ministry or not is to "seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness then all things will be added unto you". Looking at this being a promise that indeed, without any hesitation from the Father, all things shall be added unto you, added unto who? added unto ME! I claim this scripture and thinking how the first month of 2012 had been like. I'm on my way to Pretoria for Intern training until the 9th of Feb, traveling with Noscebo who soon might be an addition to our amazing team on campus ministry! There is overwhelming excitement on my part and definitely can sense it from my teammates as well. I have been learning a lot in this journey and if this is the pace, by the end of the year I would written a book hahaha.

Lord teach me how to constantly seek you! Constantly seeking your throne. What I want is to glorify you. Not because everyone around me is doing it but because the blood the purified me deserves to be glorified and worshiped. Let me not move away from your face, in all times holding on to your character even when my trials and tribulations confront me saying otherwise.

I sit in the lounge and directly across me is the door wide open with the burglar guard gate locked! Yep, we are locked in the house. Tragic just tragic. Its been over an hour now we have been panting around the house shifting furniture, unraveling the closet, disintegrating the kitchen looking for the key to our freedom. The 3 of us sit discussing where the stupid key is, how it went missing, who was the last time to see it blah blah blah.

We contemplate using the window as our exit route but ye, that would be an option only if we weren't 2 levels above ground. How about we pick the lock I thought out silently - I wonder what my Christians friends would think about me now - I finally plucked up the courage but before I do that, I Google "How to pick a lock" after gaining much wisdom about how locks work etc I then say: 'by any chance, do we have any paper clips in the house somewhere?'. I then shrink. With a lower voice he replies: 'No, why do you need it.'. I replied saying never mind. Moments later, Ayanda then finds a conspicuously looking metal thin rod and we try to pick the lock. Well...MISSION FAIL. This instance would be a great analogy to use when delivering a 'Setting captives free' sermon on Galatians 5! Enough jokes - serious issue here. At this time I should be in Howard meeting up with a possible supporter. I haven't plucked up the courage yet to tell him about the entire dilemma. By no means he would understand but on my part, I hate coming up with reasons to why I'm being late or not able to make a meeting or anything else.

Deep in thought I think: 'Alyssa would know what to do...'. (FYI she doesn't pick locks for a living she would come up with crazy ideas that would work!!!)

Nearly two weeks ago my team and I had gone over to a Staff Retreat for the Durban CCC Staff! It appeared more of a combination of individuals from a high school, a cocktail of juniors with seniors and the executive staff of the school. Certainly, my team was the youngest 'new kids around the block' however it didn't feel like that. We were ushered into the Durban team that had been made of Jon and Marie-Jean Templehoff, Gary and Cheryl Price, Sarie, Pastor Goba, Mpumi and Anele (and Mel who had not been with us due to an operation that took her out a bit). Some of the key points which encircled our retreat was the characteristics of a great team and this was surely a great opportunity to reconnect with God after an entire 2 months of holidays. Indeed it was great getting to know Sarie who grew up in a farm just outside Johannesburg and loves biltong, or Marie-Jean who can spend the entire day cooking or reading a good book, or  Gary an avid golfer and biggest Isidingo fan, Anele who never eats his vegetables and fish. Highlights of the retreat, there was alooooot of candy - I am not a big fan of chocolate (well because my doctor said it messes with my braces...thanx a milliion doc) but that weekend . . . oh man - we were covered in chocolate . . .  for a second I felt like the running tap water is chocolate water : fudge, caramel, coconut coated chocolate, nutty chocolate - YOU NAME IT!

On a different note, this week I have been learning quite much about faith! I love faith! I enjoy seeing what the bible teaches us about faith! What really strikes me about faith in the bible is when Luke writes about Zechariah the Priest in Chapter 1. To read that chapter in context - I am confounded on the amount of faith Zech had. Not in faith that God will bless them with a child but faith in that God's character remains the same. If he lacked faith....would he still have continued to intercede for the people at the temple, serving as one who keeps the incense burning on the alter....would he have bothered? Indeed, though the Lord had not answered his prayers, he still had conducted his priestly duties. The principle for me here is so amazing more especially when doing ministry work. Just because I am still waiting on the Lord for that blue house, does that have to limit me on how I express  Him or reduce the prayer I say over a sick primary school boy in Ntuzuma? Grilling that into my head for the past 5 months, faith is what will keep you intact.

Friday is our students are having a Leadership Meeting at Westville Baptist Church so thats gonna be fun and eager in seeing them all then this Saturday will be heading to Pretoria, Campus Crusade Head Offices for MPD and Intern training. Will also get to meet some of the new interns/stinters in South Africa in different parts of the country and on different campuses and university!

My family decided to head down to Durban for New Year's celebration and I thought why not join them and be a tour guide for a week. Though I came back with a terrible cough, darn that aircon, everything is getting better. I got to see some of  my friends as well who I haven't spoken to to over 3 months, also visited the staff at Ukukhanya and some of the boys I took to camp during the 2011 OVC. One of them  wasn't really feeling well - he had a cold and so he didn't have a good New Year entry into 2012 but his getting better because spoke to him when I got back to Johannesburg and though he sounded much out of breath as he did when I spoke to him, he told me he was getting better.

Recently got shocking news that my high school classmate from Athlone Boy's High, Wandile Mtshali passed on during the course of this week! You could imagine how untimely passing can be so tragic more especially for this young man's family and friend. Still waiting to hear on his funeral arrangements - this comes in when at the same time have to head back to Durban for our intern training and student leadership planning meeting with the other interns! But I have faith everything will work out and will attend his funeral.
